[ARCHIVED] Power Switch provider offers competitive rate on 100 percent green energy

FBTX ~ The popular Farmers Branch Power Switch program has marked a milestone with the current cycle’s new electricity provider dealing in 100 percent renewable energy and offering a competitive rate to assist residents in lowering their costs.

Houston-based Chariot Energy has won the reverse auction to offer a potentially lower rate. Chariot deals primarily in solar power, but also incorporates power generated by wind and water for a completely renewable energy product. Chariot’s 2020 rate will be an average of 9.93 cents per kilowatt hour for 12 months or 9.67 cents per kwh for 24 months.

Residents have the option to register for the Power Switch program as a means of pooling their buying power. An energy broker then conducts a reverse auction with providers in an effort to obtain the lowest possible rate for the pool. Anyone registering for the program will receive a rate offer. There is no obligation to accept and no cost to participate in the process. Deadline for registering for the current cycle is March 3. More than 800 participating Farmers Branch residents have saved an average of $400 a year on their electric bills in the two years of the Power Switch program.

There is no cost to the City to promote the program, nor does the City receive any financial compensation. Anyone who has not yet registered for the program can still sign up until March 3. It is free to register, and there’s no obligation to switch.
