Farmers Branch Power Switch 2018

SEPTEMBER 25, 2018

Anyone not participating in this program, or locked into a contract, will have another opportunity for Power Switch in the coming year.

AUGUST 24, 2018

FBTX ~ On behalf of Farmers Branch Power Switch, energy broker iChoosr has announced the results of a reverse auction held between electricity providers in an effort to lower rates for local residents using group buying power.

The winning rate is from family-owned Texans Energy and is an average of 9.3 cents per kilowatt hour. That average is derived from the provider's base charge of 5.5 cents, combined with Oncor's state-mandated delivery charges of about 3.5 cents per kilowatt hour and Oncor's fixed monthly delivery charge of $3.49.

By comparison, during the 'Bring Your Bill' event earlier this month at City Hall, some residents' existing rates were between 11 and 15 cents per kilowatt hour with one as high as 20 cents. Over the course of a year, the new rate could result in hundreds of dollars in savings.

Residents have been registering for the Power Switch since July in order to pool their buying power.

Anyone already signed up for the program will begin to receive offer emails with the new rate after Labor Day. Residents then have until September 25 to accept or decline, and until December 31 to make the switch.

Using energy broker iChoosr, the City of Farmers Branch plans to offer the opportunity for residents to benefit from volume buying of power in order to lower individual monthly bills with Texas Power Switch 4. Data shows that the last three power switches saved households in the program an average of $368 annually.

There is no cost and no obligation associated with the program. It provides a mechanism to help residents better understand the confusing, deregulated energy market and potentially provide a pathway to saving money on electric bills. The more people that register for the program, the better the opportunity for the broker to make a low-cost deal.

A number of other Texas cities, including Lake Dallas and Richland Hills, are participating in the program.

The power switch period moves through four phases:
  • Sign Up: Anyone can register for Texas Power Switch 4 (July 9 - September 25).
  • Auction: iChoosr will hold a reverse auction on August 21 among electricity providers. The provider who offers the cheapest rates gets to offer you a new electricity contract.
  • Personal Offer: After the auction, residents will receive a personal offer which will outline potential savings.
  • Accept/Decline: After residents receive their personal offer, they will have the option to accept or decline it. If choosing to accept, iChoosr will take care of the switching process.
The timeline for Texas Power Switch 4:
  • Registration: July 9 thru September 25
  • Bring your Bill: August 9 at City Hall
  • Auction: August 21
  • Decision: September 4 thru 25
  • Switch window: September 4 thru December 31
The “Bring Your Bill” event is an opportunity for residents to come by City Hall to meet with iChoosr representatives who can help calculate potential savings.
