FBTX ~ In late January, a number of local public agencies under the coordinating leadership of Metrocrest Services conducted the first Point in Time Homeless Count, in an effort to count the unsheltered population in Farmers Branch, Carrollton, Addison, Coppell and a portion of Dallas.
The key partners included Farmers Branch, Carrollton, Addison, Coppell and Dallas Police Departments, along with Brookhaven College Police, C-FB and Coppell ISDs and a number of area service agencies.
The number of unsheltered individuals living outdoors or in a vehicle was counted at 33, including 30 adults and three children in the area. Six were in Farmers Branch.
In addition to the unsheltered count reported to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, agencies felt it was critical to identify others in the community who, while not homeless, were housing unstable. This included school district students living in motels, doubling up with family or friends or living in a shelter. The count also identified how many residents were using motels for long-term housing.
Metrocrest Services plans to use the information to develop housing initiatives.
